Design Thinking, Material Knowledge, and Manufacturing in the 21st Century

WJEC GCSE Design and Technology assesses students' ability to design and make products using a range of materials and manufacturing processes. The qualification offers three material area endorsements — Engineering Design, Product Design, and Fashion and Textiles — all sharing a common written examination but differentiated through practical project work. Unit 1 (Design and Technology in the 21st Century) is a written paper lasting 2 hours, testing knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, design principles, systems and control, and the impact of technology on society and the environment. All material areas sit the same paper, which includes both common questions and material-area-specific sections. Unit 2 (Design and Make Task) is a substantial coursework project (approximately 35 hours) where students identify a design need, research and develop a brief, generate and refine design ideas, make a prototype or final product, and evaluate their outcome. The design portfolio evidences the entire design process from brief through to evaluation. The specification emphasises iterative design — the process of designing, testing, refining, and improving products through cycles of prototyping and user feedback. Students learn about modern manufacturing technologies (CAD/CAM, 3D printing, laser cutting) alongside traditional workshop skills. Welsh design and manufacturing heritage provides context throughout the specification. This archive contains 26 resources from Summer 2019 to Summer 2023 across all material areas.

Material Properties, Manufacturing Processes, and Iterative Design Methodology

For the written paper, build a comprehensive materials knowledge table. For each material category (metals, polymers, timbers, textiles, smart materials), know: typical examples, physical and working properties (hardness, tensile strength, elasticity, thermal conductivity), common manufacturing processes (casting, moulding, joining, finishing), and typical product applications. Exam questions frequently present a product and ask you to justify the material choice. Manufacturing processes are tested through scenario questions. Know the difference between one-off, batch, and mass production, and understand when each is appropriate. Learn specific processes: injection moulding, vacuum forming, die casting, turning, milling, CAM processes — and know the advantages, limitations, and typical products for each. For the Design and Make Task, document your iterative design process thoroughly. Show how user feedback, testing results, and your own critical evaluation led to design modifications. The strongest portfolios demonstrate genuine iteration — not a linear journey from initial idea to finished product, but a series of informed improvements based on evidence.
