Four-Skill Language Assessment with Welsh Curriculum Integration

WJEC GCSE French assesses all four language skills through separate units: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Unlike some English exam boards that combine skills into papers, WJEC tests each skill independently, giving each unit equal weight at 25% of the total qualification. Unit 1 (Speaking) is a controlled assessment conducted by teachers under examination conditions, testing students' ability to sustain conversation, respond to unpredictable questions, and present prepared material. Unit 2 (Listening) is a written exam lasting approximately 35 minutes (Foundation) or 45 minutes (Higher), testing comprehension of native-speed French across a range of topics and contexts. Unit 3 (Reading) is a written exam testing comprehension of authentic and adapted French texts. Unit 4 (Writing) tests students' ability to write French in various formats — messages, emails, articles, and extended responses. Both Foundation (grades G–D) and Higher (grades D–A*) tiers are available. The specification covers three broad contexts: Identity and Culture, Wales and the World, and Current and Future Study and Employment. The Welsh context is deliberately emphasised — students may encounter listening or reading passages about Welsh-French connections, the Breton language, or Welsh communities' links with francophone countries. This archive contains 125 resources from Summer 2018 to Summer 2023, including speaking stimulus materials and listening audio resources.

Building Aural Stamina for Listening and Deploying Three Tenses Consistently in Writing

For Higher tier, the grade A/A* boundary in writing requires consistent and accurate use of three tenses: present, past (passé composé and imperfect), and future. Examiners look for natural integration of tenses within your response, not forced tense-switching. A paragraph describing your daily routine (present) can naturally flow into what you did last weekend (past) and what you plan for the holidays (future). Practise this tense flow until it becomes natural. Listening comprehension at Higher tier includes recordings at near-native speed with some unfamiliar vocabulary. Build aural stamina by listening to French radio (France Inter, RFI) in short daily sessions. Don't try to understand every word — focus on grasping the overall message and picking out key details. In the exam, read the questions carefully before the recording plays: the questions tell you what information to listen for. For reading comprehension, don't panic when you encounter unfamiliar words. Use cognates (words similar to English), context clues, and word-building knowledge (prefixes, suffixes, verb endings) to deduce meaning. WJEC reading papers deliberately include some vocabulary beyond the prescribed list to test these inference skills. In the speaking assessment, prepare thoroughly but don't memorise entire scripts — examiners can tell when responses are pre-learned and will ask follow-up questions to check genuine understanding. Instead, prepare flexible 'building blocks': key phrases, opinion structures, and justifications that you can combine in response to different questions.
