Understanding Social Processes and Structures in Contemporary Wales and Beyond

WJEC GCSE Sociology introduces students to the systematic study of human society, examining how social structures, processes, and institutions shape individual behaviour and group experiences. The qualification is assessed through two written components available in both English and Welsh medium (Cymdeithaseg). Component 1 (Understanding Social Processes) covers the core sociological foundations: key sociological concepts (socialisation, norms, values, culture, social control), family structures and changes in family life, education systems and their role in society, and sociological research methods (surveys, interviews, observation, secondary data). Component 2 (Understanding Social Structures) examines social inequality and differentiation based on class, gender, ethnicity, and age, as well as crime and deviance, power, and the media's influence on society. The specification integrates Welsh sociological data and case studies throughout — examining poverty in Welsh communities, educational attainment data from Welsh schools, crime statistics from Welsh police forces, and the distinctive social and cultural characteristics of Welsh society including the Welsh language revival and the impact of deindustrialisation on former mining communities. The bilingual provision means this archive includes both English-medium papers and Cymdeithaseg (Welsh-medium sociology) papers. This collection contains 42 resources from Autumn 2020 to Summer 2023.

Using Sociological Perspectives Analytically and Evaluating Research Methods

Every sociology question can be strengthened by applying sociological perspectives. Learn the key perspectives — functionalism (society works like a body, each institution has a function), Marxism (society is shaped by class conflict and economic power), feminism (gender inequality is a central feature of society), and interactionism (meaning is constructed through social interaction). For any topic, practise applying at least two perspectives and comparing their explanations. Research methods questions are guaranteed in every paper. For each method (questionnaires, interviews, observation, experiments, secondary data), know: the practical advantages and disadvantages, the ethical considerations, whether the data is quantitative or qualitative, and how issues of reliability, validity, and representativeness apply. Practise evaluating hypothetical research designs — 'a sociologist wants to study bullying in schools. Suggest a suitable method and explain why it is appropriate.' Extended writing in sociology requires you to present a balanced argument. For a question like 'Is the family still the most important agent of socialisation?', present evidence supporting the family's importance (primary socialisation, emotional bonds), evidence challenging it (peer groups, media, education), and a conclusion that acknowledges complexity rather than offering a simplistic answer.
