Classical Language, Literature, and Roman Civilisation in Wales

WJEC GCSE Latin combines language acquisition with literary and cultural study through three components. Component 1 (Latin Language) tests translation and comprehension skills through an unseen Latin passage for translation into English, comprehension questions on a second passage, and English-to-Latin sentence translation. Component 2 (Latin Literature and Sources) tests students' ability to read, translate, and analyse prescribed Latin texts, demonstrating understanding of literary techniques, historical context, and thematic content. Component 3 (Roman Civilisation) offers a choice of thematic studies examining aspects of Roman life and culture. The language component covers the prescribed vocabulary list and grammar required for translation — noun declensions, verb conjugations across tenses (present, imperfect, perfect, pluperfect), adjective agreement, pronouns, and key constructions including purpose clauses, indirect statements, and ablative absolutes. The literature component presents passages from set texts that students have studied during the course, testing both translation accuracy and literary analysis. Authors may include Virgil, Ovid, Pliny, or other classical writers, and students must demonstrate understanding of how Latin authors use language to create effects. WJEC is one of the few boards offering Latin GCSE in Wales, and its Classical Civilisation component connects Roman Britain to Welsh heritage — including the Roman presence at Caerleon (Isca Augusta), one of the best-preserved Roman fortresses in Europe. This archive contains 76 resources from Autumn 2020 to Summer 2023.

Building Translation Speed, Learning Verb Principal Parts, and Analysing Latin Style

Translation speed comes from knowing your vocabulary cold. Work through the prescribed vocabulary list systematically using flashcards or spaced repetition. The most common translation errors are not grammatical mistakes but vocabulary gaps — if you don't know what a word means, no amount of grammatical analysis will help you translate the sentence. Aim to recognise every word on the prescribed list instantly. Verb principal parts must be memorised as complete sets. For each verb, learn: present tense (amo), infinitive (amare), perfect tense (amavi), and supine/past participle (amatum). The perfect and pluperfect tenses are built from the third principal part, which is often irregular (fero, ferre, tuli, latum). If you don't know the perfect stem, you cannot translate past-tense sentences accurately. For the Literature component, practise translating your set texts without notes, then check against the published translation. For literary analysis questions, focus on how the Latin author creates effects through word order (which is far freer in Latin than in English), repetition, contrast, metaphor, and enjambment. Be specific: don't just say 'Virgil uses vivid language' — identify the specific word, explain its connotations, and analyse how its position in the sentence affects the reading. For Roman Civilisation, learn specific evidence — archaeological sites, Latin inscriptions, artefacts, and ancient sources. Questions asking about daily life, religion, or entertainment expect concrete examples, not vague generalisations about Roman society.
