Analysing Welsh Poetry, Prose, and Drama in Their Cultural Context

WJEC GCSE Llenyddiaeth Gymraeg (Welsh Literature) is the study of literary texts written in Welsh, examining poetry, prose, and drama by Welsh-language authors. This qualification is taken by students in Welsh-medium education and is the literature companion to Cymraeg Iaith (Welsh Language). The qualification is tiered: Sylfaen (Foundation, grades G–D) and Uwch (Higher, grades D–A*). Unit 1 assesses poetry — students study a selection of Welsh-language poems, analysing themes, poetic techniques, imagery, and the use of traditional and modern Welsh poetic forms. The rich tradition of Welsh poetry, from medieval cynghanedd to contemporary free verse, provides an exceptionally diverse literary landscape for study. Unit 2 assesses prose and drama — students study set Welsh-language novels, short stories, or plays, analysing character development, narrative technique, themes, and the social and cultural contexts that shape these works. Welsh literature reflects the distinctive experiences of Welsh-speaking communities: the tension between rural and urban Wales, the Welsh language revival, generational change, and the relationship between tradition and modernity. All examination papers and responses are in Welsh. This archive contains 104 resources from Summer 2017 to Winter 2024 across both tiers.

Welsh Poetic Traditions, Close Reading of Set Texts, and Literary Essay Structure

Welsh poetry has unique formal traditions that you should understand and be able to identify. Cynghanedd (strict-metre poetry with internal alliteration and rhyme patterns) remains influential in modern Welsh poetry. Even in free verse, Welsh poets often use techniques rooted in this tradition: sain (assonance), cytseinedd (consonance), and odl (rhyme). Being able to identify and discuss these distinctively Welsh techniques elevates your analysis beyond generic literary commentary. For set text prose and drama, develop your character analysis in Welsh using appropriate literary terminology: 'cymeriad' (character), 'datblygiad' (development), 'cymhelliad' (motivation), 'gwrthdaro' (conflict), 'thema' (theme), 'arddull' (style). Practise writing analytical paragraphs in Welsh that follow the pattern: pwynt (point), tystiolaeth (evidence), dadansoddiad (analysis), cysylltiad (link). Exam answers at the Uwch level must show awareness of how the text connects to its cultural context. Welsh literature since the mid-twentieth century reflects the anxieties and aspirations of a language community navigating rapid social change. Understanding this context — the decline of rural Welsh-speaking communities, the growth of Welsh-medium education, the political devolution movement — enriches your literary analysis.
