Construction Industry Foundations and Sustainable Design in Wales

WJEC GCSE Built Environment is a distinctive vocational qualification providing an introduction to the construction and built environment sector. Unique to the WJEC specification, it covers the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of buildings and infrastructure, connecting directly to Wales's construction industry and architectural heritage. Unit 1 (Introduction to the Built Environment) is assessed through an onscreen examination testing knowledge of construction materials, building techniques, sustainability principles, health and safety in construction, and the roles of professionals in the built environment sector. The assessment is computer-based, using a mix of multiple choice, short answer, and scenario-based questions. The qualification introduces students to key concepts: how buildings are designed to meet the needs of their users, how construction materials are selected based on their properties and environmental impact, how building regulations ensure safety and quality, and how sustainable design principles can reduce the environmental footprint of the built environment. Welsh examples — from the restoration of historic buildings in Welsh towns to new sustainable developments — feature throughout the specification. This qualification provides a foundation for progression to BTEC or apprenticeship pathways in construction, architecture, surveying, or civil engineering. Construction Materials Knowledge and Understanding Building Regulations

Focus your revision on the properties of key construction materials — concrete, steel, timber, brick, glass, and insulation materials. For each material, know: its structural properties (strength, durability, weight), its environmental impact (embodied energy, recyclability), its typical applications in buildings, and any limitations or maintenance requirements. Exam questions frequently present a building scenario and ask you to recommend appropriate materials with justification. Building regulations and health and safety are heavily tested. Learn the purpose of key regulations (Building Regulations, CDM regulations, fire safety requirements) and how they affect design and construction decisions. Know the roles of different professionals — architects, structural engineers, quantity surveyors, building inspectors — and how they collaborate on construction projects. Sustainability is a recurring exam theme. Understand how buildings can be designed to reduce energy consumption (insulation, passive solar design, green roofs), how construction waste can be minimised (prefabrication, material recycling), and how renewable energy technologies can be integrated into building design.
